August 2012 SAIMC

At the July Technology Evening, Kevin Preston, business unit manager at Phoenix Contact, presented the full gambit of industrial wireless technology in the automation field and addressed the various technologies and topologies from Trusted Wireless, Industrial Bluetooth, Wireless LAN/ Ethernet, 3G/ GSM based systems and Wireless HART.

These technologies all co-exist in the same frequency band, are licence free and are not affected by electro-magnetic interference from plant and machinery. All these systems are capable of being integrated into existing networks and are compatible with all scada, DCS and PLC suppliers.

These technologies are growing in popularity for their security, cost effectiveness and ease of installation in many applications. Included in the presentation were case studies which covered some typical applications, giving the pros and cons in each case.

The Johannesburg branch thanks Kevin Preston for this informative presentation.

The Johannesburg branch was awarded branch of the year for 2011. Seen accepting their certificates (l to r) Eric Carter, Alvin Seitz, Johan Maartens, Debbie Scott, Andrew Bharath and Jay King.
