Siemens expands power supply offering

December 2015 Electrical Power & Protection

Siemens has added further base units, buffer modules and extra functions to its Sitop PSU8600 power supply system. With a 40 ampere load current, the new buffer modules increase availability by achieving bridging times of up to 20 seconds in case of power failures. If a fourth expansion module (CNX8600) is connected, the power supply offers up to 20 outputs. Both the outputs of the base units and the expansion modules can be set to a wider voltage range of between 5 and 28 V. This means that users do not need external power supplies for special voltages. The 40 A base unit is now also available with a single output. Siemens also offers two compact 20 A base units, one with a width of 80 mm and a single output, the other one with a width of 100 mm and 4 outputs, each supplying 5 A. Users can simply activate the integrated web server with a switch and read out power supply data from mobile devices such as smartphones, thereby speeding up commissioning, for example.

Two new BUF8600 buffer modules, based on high-capacity UltraCap dual-layer capacitors, provide longer bridging times in case of power failures. At 24 V and a 40 A load current, the 60 mm wide buffer module buffers for 4 seconds, the 125 mm wide version for up to 10 seconds. Lower load currents allow correspondingly longer buffer times. Up to 2 buffer modules – also combined – can be integrated into the networked system. For example, buffer times of 80 seconds can be achieved at 10 A, which is usually sufficient to shut down a PC safely.

Users can now simply switch the integrated web server on and off with a DIP switch on the base unit instead of using the TIA Portal. This enables operating and diagnostic data to be read, even without a programming device, by using mobile devices such as tablet PCs, smartphones or notebooks; this speeds up commissioning and troubleshooting.

The Sitop PSU8600 was introduced in 2014 and is the first power supply that can be fully integrated into Totally Integrated Automation (TIA), which simplifies configuration and operation in the TIA Portal and Step 7. Comprehensive operating and diagnostics information is available through the integral Profinet interface. This information can be evaluated directly via Simatic S7 and visualised in WinCC. Standardised Step 7 function blocks for Simatic controllers and ready-made WinCC faceplates are available as free downloads for fast integration in user programs. The Sitop PSU8600 is particularly suitable for industries that have high requirements in terms of reliability and integration, such as the automotive, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, and also in plant building and special machine construction.
