Cathodic protection for the 21st century

November 2015 Electrical Power & Protection

Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique to control the corrosion of metal. CP systems are most commonly used to protect structures such as pipelines, storage tanks, steel piles, offshore oil platforms, and reinforcing steel in concrete.

The simplest method is galvanic protection where a metal of different electrochemical potential is used as a 'sacrificial' anode. For larger structures, galvanic anodes cannot deliver enough current to provide complete protection, but impressed current cathodic protection systems use a DC power source to achieve this.

Reduce CP operating costs

These DC power sources require regular monitoring and adjustment to ensure that they are providing the necessary protection. This includes specialised testing overseen by a cathodic protection consultant, which, if the structure being protected is remote, can become costly.

Omniflex are experts in remote monitoring and control. With years of experience operating in the harshest of environments, it has applied this technology to provide a reliable solution for remotely monitored and controlled CP systems which lowers the ongoing monitoring costs.

Benefits

Whether it be an existing impressed current CP system, or a new installation, a PowerView CP solution can reduce overall life cycle costs. PowerView CP is scalable, so whether it is one or one hundred systems, management and control of CP assets is easier with a unified Omniflex solution.

The PowerView CP system has been designed with high reliability components and conservative design parameters to ensure the longest possible operating life. (30 years design life is quoted on most components.) The system is modular allowing easy on-site servicing.
