SEW-Eurodrive highlighted the benefits its innovative Movitrans contactless energy transfer system at the recent 2013 Process Expo. The contactless system works on the principle of inductive energy transfer: SEW-Eurodrive electronics division manager, Norman Maleka, notes that it transfers electrical energy without contact from a fixed conductor to numerous mobile consumers.
“The electromagnetic connection is made via an air gap and is not subject to wear. This makes Movitrans the perfect supply system for all mobile applications and where equipment has to cover long distances at high speeds in a maintenance free environment. It is also suited for applications where outside contaminants are not permitted as well as in wet and damp environments,” he explains.
Another major environmental advantage of this type of power supply is the fact that it is emission free and resistant to contamination from external sources. Maleka indicates that the Movitrans system provides for greater safety too: “Workers can actually walk over the cables and touch them with their hands without worrying about electrocution.”
In addition to Movitrans, the Movigear mechatronic drive system was also on display. Maleka notes: “Movigear is the next logical step in the development decentralised drive systems. Its high quality networking features help reduce the startup time and support monitoring and maintenance tasks. Drive tasks can be solved quickly and easily using the corresponding application software.”
