The shiny and uneven surfaces of six-packs wrapped in PET films constitute a challenge for photo-electric sensors. The random and uncontrollable reflections of the emitted light by the surface not only make exact detection difficult, but they can also result in conventional photoelectric sensors ‘losing’ signal due to deflection.
For this reason, SICK Automation has equipped its new MultiPac sensor with a dual receiver system to compensate the brief deflections caused by the uneven surface of the packaging unit. In addition, the high power LED improves diffuse reflection and receiving characteristics. The custom ASIC in the sensor takes care of signal evaluation and adjustment of the two receiver systems takes place by means of special software.
Overall, this package of constructive measures in the MultiPac sensor guarantees that every six-pack is detected reliably and signal interruptions no longer occur leading to improved availability and performance of the bottling plant. The MultiPac sensor achieves new levels of detection reliability resulting in it being nominated for the 2012 GIT Sensor Masters Award.
