As the airport is open for business 24/7, Stansted’s engineers have only four hours per night in which to conduct the necessary predictive maintenance of its low-voltage equipment. The entire inspection cycle was protracted and no system could be checked under load. Also this airport is classed as a strategic airport, thus having to take re-directed traffic at any time of day or night, deviation from this ability is detrimental to air traffic safety around London which results in large fines.
Chelmsford-based IRISS, clinched a deal with the airport to construct and install 72 custom-made infrared windows to allow the engineers to complete more efficient and safe inspections of the fuses that feed terminal systems, such as computers and baggage belts.
David Potter, Stansted Airport’s engineering compliance manager explains: “Previously, the entire inspection cycle was a long process and it took engineers two nights to shut down the system and inspect just one electrical panel by hand. With the installation of IRISS infrared inspection windows and the help of a thermal imaging camera, we can carry out checks of all the panels in just five hours making savings in survey times and equipment costs. The windows are really well constructed and the overall service from IRISS was second to none. Nothing was too much trouble and the engineers were extremely professional.”
The installation of polymer windows will ensure the safety of engineering personnel and efficient running of their electrical systems. Unlike the crystal (calcium fluoride) windows, the IRISS range of polymer IR Windows carry a lifetime unconditional warrantee and are not porous nor do they require continued checking of transmisivity.
