Magnet launches new company
March 2013
News
Magnet, a specialist in the supply, installation and support of electrical equipment and industrial instrumentation, has launched a new company, Magnet Energy.
“Magnet Energy implements process energy saving initiatives that include pumping and fan solutions, heat pumps and load shifting, as well as refrigeration and processed air optimisation,” says Graeme Harding, technical director, Magnet Energy. “Meaningful energy savings begin with a detailed audit, which is followed by specific solutions for each site. By analysing a plant’s energy consumption, we can find opportunities to recover waste heat from one area that can be efficiently used in another area, as in hot water production.”
Graeme Harding, technical director of Magnet Energy, on site at ABI Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal.
Magnet’s heat pump solutions have replaced coal fired boilers with a combination of heat recovery and heat pumps. Currently, heat pump projects are being carried out in industrial ablution blocks and commercially in hotels. Energy is saved in pumping and fan systems by changing the control method or by installing variable speed drives or new pumps, and new funding mechanisms have enabled Magnet Energy to provide solutions at refrigeration plants with paybacks of less than a year in some cases.
The company is currently involved in energy-saving projects throughout the country. These include refrigeration optimisation and general process optimisation on pump and fan systems. An example is an energy-efficient hot water project at Rainbow’s chicken processing plant in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal. The installation of an ammonia heat pump – the first of its kind in South Africa – significantly improved the efficiency of the hot water system at the plant and reduced steam consumption. The company celebrates 40 years this year and was recently presented with an Eskom eta Award – 2012 Industrial Category Winner – for this project.
