In 2010, Sperosens won its first cross border tender for phase 1 fire suppression on conveyor belts at a well known platinum mine in Zimbabwe. The mine identified the requirement not only to suppress fires on the belts, but also to prevent fires from taking hold through early detection and appropriate suppression in identified high risk areas. Due to the nature and layout of the environment, Sperosens recommended that compressed air foam systems (CAFS) should be installed in compliance with NFPA16 standards. These systems were recommended because the mine had difficulties with access to water, also high additional costs would have been incurred if it became necessary to install dedicated fire water pipes.
A Spersosens team consisting of a fire engineer, draughtsman, installation and project managers, as well as the key accounts consultant completed a comprehensive risk assessment on site before commencement of the project. Under the guidance of the project manager, the company invested in extensive system training at its head office to equip personnel to maintain the equipment on site.
Phase 1 was completed successfully, resulting in the mine approving a second phase to include other high-risk areas. The major benefits are improved safety, reduced risk of damage to conveyors and the prevention of exposure to the hazardous toxic gases emitted during a fire.
