Hirschmann OpenBAT Clear Space Wireless

September 2012 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

The new Hirschmann OpenBAT platform allows users to customise industrial standard WLAN access points and clients via the Internet – giving maximum flexibility in applications where it is really needed. The devices are designed for markets and applications including public transport, factory and process automation, power supply, power generation from renewable energies and mining.

Characterised by the patented wireless technology including Clear Space and ESD protection, in combination with the powerful HiLCOS operating system, the WLAN access points and clients offer fast data transmission and maximum reliability for industrial networks. This new product range continues to build on the powerful software already known from other Hirschmann BAT products. Key benefits include maximum flexibility and outstanding performance, thanks to superior WLAN capabilities for Infrastructure, WDS and mesh networks to integrated routing, security, WAN access to redundancy and VPN. All supported by management tools that lead the user to the most effective solution possible.

Product benefits

The OpenBAT range, comprising the BAT-R (IP20) and BAT-F (IP67) series, supports the IEEE 802.11n transmission standard, which allows data speeds of up to 450 Mbps in both the 5 GHz and the 2,4 GHz bands.

Both series are based on entirely new hardware, most notably Clear Space wireless interfaces, which are especially geared to the requirements of an industrial environment. They also have a powerful HiLCOS operating system with extensive management, security and quality of service functions plus layer 3 IP routing.

The number of radio modules and Ethernet LAN ports can be configured individually, as can the voltage supply concept. This also applies to over a dozen certificates that qualify these access points and clients for use in, for example, the power supply industry, the gas and oil sector or rail transportation. They can be used to set up fast and stable infrastructure and meshed networks, as well as wireless distribution systems (WDS) or point-to-point connections.

Applications

This product family was designed with maximum flexibility in mind. It is suitable for applications in a range of markets, especially in public transport, discrete automation, process automation, transportation, power transmission and distribution, mining and renewable energy generation.

The new ‘Open’ platform makes it possible to realise wireless solutions in areas where this was not possible before and allows users to choose the right product variant for the best solution. These devices have enhanced shock and vibration stability, making them extremely suitable for use in harsh and demanding industrial environments, for example:

* Power transmission and distribution, where thanks to remote service access application operators can access internal networks from outside and as a result reduce the risk of entering areas with high voltage.

* Mining, here superior vibration resistance allows the use of wireless links for equipment on vehicles, so intelligent devices can be used for the optimisation of processes and reduced risk of accidents.
