Endress+Hauser's universal FDT-based software package

September 2012 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Like all FDT platforms, this piece of software is compatible with all approved DTMs (Device-Type Managers) which manage all configurations and communication information. The DTMs run within the FDT environment and are independent of the communication protocol, whether it is Ethernet, HART, Profibus or Foundation Fieldbus.

The main use of FieldCare is parametisation and diagnosis: off and online parametisation allows devices to be configured in both the engineering and commissioning phases. Endress+Hauser devices offer diagnoses based on Namur NE107 recommendation, which ensures that the device reports a specific warning or error message which is accompanied by a recommendation for corrective action.

Since the introduction of FieldCare version 2.07.xx, some enhancements have been made; for instance, the licensing model has been improved for easy upgrading or extension of features. The free version of FieldCare, known as Device Setup, allows configuration and diagnosis of Endress+Hauser equipment and also third-party devices.

One of the innovative features added to today’s version of FieldCare is the use of iDTMs (i stands for interpreter) which can be part of the Plant Asset Management package. iDTMs are special DTMs that can be used with devices that are not part of the FDT group. Manufacturers that do not support FDT technology usually use DD (Device Description) or EDDL (Electronic Device Description Language) based interface software. The iDTM then interprets the DD/EDDL of a device using FieldCare.

The update service is an optional offering which ensures that users have an up-to-date version by receiving regular updates.

Documents pertaining to each measuring point which can be mapped out on the network can be easily accessed through each of the nodes. These documents can include calibration certificates, device parameters or even drawings.

The plant asset management licence also presents the possibility of using Web-enabled Asset Management (W@M). Once activated, this functionality allows the Endress+Hauser W@M Internet portal to be opened from the device node on FieldCare. This connection then gives access to information about the device, such as: original calibration documentation, spare part finder, and service and repair information, amongst others.

Another module that can be added to the FieldCare package is the Condition Monitoring feature, which extracts information from selected devices and alerts users of a tendency towards failure. In this way, true predictive maintenance can be achieved. Since Condition Monitoring combines process and instrument know-how, it is engineered together with the potential users for their needs. Condition Monitoring can be accessed via the web browser and alerts can be issued via e-mail.
