Festo exhibited its efficient solutions for municipal water and wastewater management at WISA’s recent biennial conference and exhibition in Cape Town. The company presented and highlighted its holistic system solutions and components to meet the automation requirements for future models of urban infrastructure. Population growth, urbanisation and rising energy costs are just some of the challenges being faced by towns and major cities worldwide. Intelligent solutions need to be developed in order to make efficient and sustainable use of increasingly scarce resources.
“As an international supplier of pneumatic and electrical automation technologies, Festo is extending its expertise in water and wastewater management in terms of energy efficiency, resource issues and sustainability,” said Brian Abbott, product manager pneumatics at Festo.
A number of displays were available at the Festo stand detailing the various water and wastewater technologies that it currently offers. The company has already provided and implemented many process automation solutions in several water treatment plants internationally. These solutions are geared towards more rapid and efficient commissioning, lower investment and a significant reduction in lifecycle costs.
Festo recently provided a customised control solution to the Meulwater Water Treatment Works (WTW), a newly constructed purification plant located in the ecologically sensitive Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. The customer’s requirements were low energy, reliability, minimised long-term plant maintenance and easy installation.
“We supplied and installed automation equipment for the plant filtration and backwash recovery systems that fulfilled all these requirements. The components form part of a concept that ensures the plant can use a hybrid centralised or decentralised approach to control, implementing a ‘best of both worlds’ approach. This is something we are very proud of,” noted Abbott. “The Meulwater WTW installation is another example of the type of complete automation solutions that Festo is able to offer customers in addition to the traditional pneumatic product range.”
