Modern Energy Metering Solution Enhances Reliability and Reporting for Major Power Utility

June 2026 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Project & Industry

This project involved the implementation of a modern energy metering system for a major power utility operating within the industrial automation and energy management sector. The objective was to improve the reliability, accessibility, and accuracy of energy data while simplifying infrastructure and reducing system complexity.

Project Outcome

The solution delivered a highly reliable energy monitoring platform capable of supporting continuous operation in a demanding utility environment.

Key benefits included:

• Reliable 24/7 energy measurement with minimal downtime

• A 40% reduction in cabling complexity through the adoption of Ethernet communications

• Enhanced operational efficiency through comprehensive real-time reporting

• Historical data storage exceeding 100 days, enabling detailed trend analysis and performance monitoring

The result is a scalable and robust metering infrastructure that provides operators with accurate, actionable information for improved energy management and decision-making.

Biggest Challenge & Our Solution

The primary challenge was balancing cost reduction with the high levels of reliability required in a utility environment.

To address this, the team implemented a dual EMDAS architecture with Ethernet integration. This approach reduced hardware requirements and associated costs while maintaining system redundancy, data integrity, and continuous availability. By replacing traditional pulse-signal communication with Ethernet-based communications, the system achieved both improved performance and simplified installation.

Key Technologies & Tools Used

• FTP Server for remote file management

• .NET-based EMDAS server software

• Microsoft SQL database for secure data storage and reporting

• Ethernet communications replacing conventional pulse-signal infrastructure

• NTP time synchronisation for accurate system-wide timestamping

One Thing We'd Do Differently

Future projects would benefit from more extensive field-testing protocols prior to commissioning, helping to further reduce implementation time and streamline system startup.

Unique Selling Point

Backed by more than 20 years of EMDAS development and deployment experience, the team brings deep expertise in integrating legacy metering systems with modern Ethernet technologies. The result is a reliable, future-ready solution designed for continuous operation in mission-critical environments.

Project Highlights

• 24/7 energy measurement and monitoring

• 40% reduction in cabling complexity

• Dual EMDAS architecture for enhanced reliability

• Ethernet-based communications infrastructure

• Over 100 days of historical data retention

• Real-time reporting and operational visibility

This project demonstrates how thoughtful system design and modern communication technologies can improve reliability, reduce complexity, and provide greater visibility into energy usage across large-scale utility operations.
