Rail electrification and EV solutions for integrated transport systems

October 2025 Electrical Power & Protection

A comprehensive range of solutions for rail electrification and electric vehicles is available from leading technology provider ABB, contributing significantly to integrated and sustainable transport systems.

Rail is being rediscovered as a sustainable and energy-efficient form of transport. ABB understands the importance and implications of running railway networks. It provides complete solutions that protect the infrastructure and meet the expectations of users and transport stakeholders for all key applications. These include infrastructure, passenger stations, control and signalling units, tunnels and rolling stock.

For example, ABB provides advanced traction power supply systems that ensure efficient and reliable power for rail networks. These systems include substations, transformers and switchgear, which are essential for converting and distributing electricity to trains.

ABB’s control and signalling solutions enhance the safety and efficiency of rail operations. These systems manage train movements, reduce delays and improve overall network performance. In addition, ABB manufactures and services components and subsystems for urban, intercity and high-speed trains. This includes traction motors, converters and onboard power systems that improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

Technology from ABB connects the entire electrified public transit ecosystem from utility grid to vehicle, distributing power safely and reliably at an electric vehicle (EV) charging site. It includes a range of distribution technologies like medium- and low-voltage switchgear, step-down transformers, surge protective devices, electric panels, switchboards and circuit breakers, safety switches and EV chargers.

The latter includes the ABB Terra Fast Charger, a high-power charging solution designed to meet the growing demands of EV infrastructure. Product marketing specialist, Veron Maharaj says that it can deliver up to 350 kW of power, allowing for rapid charging of EVs, and can charge a vehicle to 100 km of range in under three minutes.

The charger supports dynamic DC power sharing to optimise the use of charging assets by distributing power be-ween multiple vehicles, a useful feature for busy charging stations. The ABB Terra Fast Charger is modular, making it scalable and adaptable to different installation requirements and allowing for easy upgrades and futureproofing.

It features a user-friendly interface with customisable options, including LED strips and payment terminals, to enhance the user experience. Despite its high power, the Terra Fast Charger has a compact design, making it suitable for various locations, including urban areas and highway corridors. “The ABB Terra Fast Charger is a key component in the transition to sustainable and efficient transportation systems, supporting the growth of e-mobility and reducing the environmental impact of road transport,” comments Maharaj.

ABB E-mobility is at the forefront of charging innovations for EVs, including public transit, offering a range of innovative solutions tailored to different scenarios for operators. Electric public transportation, including buses, trams and trains, is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. ABB is driving this shift with its comprehensive electrification solutions from grid to charger, enhancing urban transit efficiency.

ABB provides integrated solutions for electric buses and cars, including depot charging systems and infrastructure for public transit. These solutions help reduce urban congestion and pollution. In terms of its contribution to sustainable transport, ABB’s technologies are designed to maximise energy efficiency, reducing the overall carbon footprint of transportation systems.

This includes the use of renewable energy sources and energy management systems. By electrifying public transit and providing efficient EV charging infrastructure, ABB helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, contributing to cleaner urban environments. Moreover, its solutions are designed to be integrated into existing transport networks, enhancing their sustainability and efficiency.

This includes digital solutions for monitoring and optimising performance, ensuring long-term sustainability. ABB’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in its comprehensive approach to modern transport challenges, making it a key player in the transition to greener and more efficient transportation systems.
