SAIMC: Secunda branch

April 2025 SAIMC

Here are some highlights from recent SAIMC Secunda meetings:

In November 2024, Clinton Kistensamy delivered an engaging and insightful presentation at the technology evening, shedding light on advancements in safety-critical systems and their practical applications. Drawing on his extensive expertise, he explored how modern technologies are reshaping industrial safety, seamlessly combining flexibility, efficiency and cyber security. He shared using real-world examples like pressure protection systems, pipeline leak detection and turbomachinery control can safeguard lives and assets. The session sparked lively discussions as Clinton addressed the challenges of balancing safety with operational efficiency, and keeping pace with rapid technological changes.

Last year in December, Kegan Smith and Yorick Smith from PREI delivered a captivating presentation on compressors and ways to improve their performance. They established a relaxed and interactive atmosphere from the beginning by encouraging the audience to share their thoughts on compressors, which in turn set the stage for an engaging discussion. They expanded on the various types of compressors − positive displacement, centrifugal and axial − detailing how their distinct designs influence their operation. A live demonstration made these concepts much easier to understand, showing how compressors work and giving a clear example of what happens during a surge, including the distinct change in sound pitch and other noticeable effects. The session provided practical insights and hands-on examples, enhancing the audience’s understanding of how innovation is driving more efficient and sustainable compressor technology.

The 2024 AGM and tech talk was held at Proconics in January, bringing members of the branch together to reflect on the year that had passed and plan for the future. Lezahn Meiring chaired the meeting and continues in her role as general manager of the SAIMC Secunda Branch, ensuring strong leadership and continuity.

One of the biggest highlights of 2024 was the annual golf day. The event remains a favourite among members and industry professionals, and its success is a testament to the strong support from sponsors and participants.

A major milestone was the 25th anniversary celebration in November 2024. It was a special occasion, recognising the journey of the SAIMC Secunda Branch and the impact it has had over the years. Although no newsletters were published in 2024, plans are in place to bring them back this year to keep members informed and engaged. Membership also grew, which is a positive sign of the branch’s continued growth. A huge thank you goes out to the branch’s members, sponsors and supporters for making this possible.

The committee remains strong, with the existing team members continuing in their roles, while four new members have joined: Saieshana Ramasamy, Sipho Mahlangu and Mthokosizi Chagwe from Proconics, and Christi-Arno Nel from MegChem. These additions will bring fresh ideas and expertise to the team, helping to drive new initiatives and expand the branch’s outreach.

Looking ahead, one of the key events already confirmed for the year is the 2025 Golf Day, which will take place on 22 May 2025 at Graceland Casino and Country Club. Another exciting event in the pipeline is the African Petrochemical Roadshow for 2025 highlighting control, instrumentation and automation.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making 2024 a success. The committee looks forward to another great year ahead.
