Members and visitors had the chance to learn about the weather station, lightning storm trackers, seismometers, Schumann resonance detectors, WX satellite receiver, multi-sensor modules, ionospheric disturbance monitors, amateur astronomy and radio astronomy, support systems, ADS-B receivers and amateur radio work.

Secunda Weather Station can measure temperatures, humidity, wind speed and wind direction, barometric pressure, solar radiation and rainfall. All of these measurements are directly uploaded to the Internet database through an Ethernet connection.

August Technology Evening

On Thursday 03 August Robert Wright from RJ Connect did a presentation on ‘Ramp-up your network security’. Network security is not a goal that can be reached, but a process and an attitude. New vulnerabilities are discovered every day and threats continue to evolve and personnel become lax or find work-arounds to security measures.

You need to assume that attackers are at least as intelligent and motivated as you (the defender) and that the weakest point in the system is the most likely to be targeted. Network security may be achieved, or lost, incrementally through small actions and inactions.

All instrumentation and control related mechanicians, technicians and/or engineers are welcome to attend our monthly Technology Events in 2017, the planned dates for the rest of the year are:

• 07 September 2017;

• 12 October 2017;

• 02 November 2017;

All the Secunda SAIMC presentations will earn CPD points for ECSA registered persons and any enquiries can be directed to the branch chairman, Johan Maritz, at [email protected] or cell +27(0)82 856 3865.
