SAIMC Johannesburg Branch News

December 2001 SAIMC

Branch of the year

The year has come and gone and the points for 'Branch of the year' must now be submitted to Council for adjudication of the winner. From the Johannesburg Branch we have to admit that Secunda put in a stirling effort and it looks as if they might just take it this year. If they do, let me just say that no other branch in the country, including Johannesburg, is more deserving of this honour than Piet and his crew. Good luck guys, let the best team win!

Database

The Johannesburg Branch had a full programme as usual, with meetings, social events and site visits providing fun, education and excitement for our members. As most of our members are aware, we lost our database at the beginning of the year when Cornu's laptop was stolen, and although we did our utmost to rebuild it as fast as possible, there are still a lot of our members out there whose contact details we don't have. Please people; send us an e-mail to the address below so we can add your name to the list, if you do not act on this you will not receive our monthly news and meeting notifications for next year.

Golf day

Rain, rain and more rain. But nobody can deny that it was fun and despite low flying criticism from the Secunda team and suggestions of a lack of cohesion in the Johannesburg Committee, it went as planned. Just so everybody understands, our Vice Chairman, Morne Maree, left early to catch a flight to Holland, and Johan Steyn, our Chairman was not at all involved in this years event for personal reasons. What it does show is that our committee has such a depth of organisational talent that Warren, Cornu and Johan van Jaarsveld just took up the responsibilities at very short notice without blinking an eye.

For the record, we made a provisional decision to schedule not one, but two golf days for next year, one in late April and the other in early September. This ought to make the competition sit up and take note.

2002 AGM

We will have our Annual General Meeting on 16 January, the THIRD Wednesday of the month when the new committee will be chosen and the Chairman elected. If anybody would like to be a member of our committee, please let us know at the address below.

Conclusion

We would welcome any and all suggestions from our members as to what they would like to do or see next year and this would be discussed at the AGM when we plan our program for 2002. One of the events under the spotlight will be the annual Business Breakfast which was very poorly supported this year. Not only do we find it increasingly difficult to sell the event, it is even more difficult afterwards to get the money out of some of the so-called 'successful, high-profile' instrumentation company's in South Africa. It is so bad that even our Patron members and the majority of Council don't support us in this event, so we might decide to have it only every second or third year.

Johan Steyn (Chairman)
