SAIMC: Durban branch

August 2015 SAIMC

The Durban branch held its annual golf day on Friday, 3 July. As often happens with mid-winter days in Durban, the weather was warm and breezeless with not a scarf or jacket in sight, and the 100 golfers entered into the four-ball alliance competition were relaxed and in good spirits as they teed off. The committee decided on a new venue this year and the Kloof Country Club provided a great and convenient location. The greens were nicely kept and reasonably green (considering the drought conditions) and the sponsors’ banners and flags lent a festive air to the occasion. Prize-giving was a jovial affair with a great array of prizes for everybody and a good old Durban curry and rice for supper. It also happened to be branch chairman Howard Lister’s birthday, so a rousing ‘Happy Birthday’ set the tone for the evening.

The Durban committee would like to thank Steve Sanders for his help with organising the day, as well as the golfers, sponsors and prize donators, without whom this day would not be possible, let alone the success that it was.

In the photos, the winning four-ball from Endress+Hauser (Thys Labuschagne, George Dyman, Kushal Bugareth and Thys Otto) is seen about to tee off and then accepting their trophy.

John Owen-Ellis (right) is seen thanking Carmine Canale, business development manager of the Gas Analytics Division of Endress+Hauser who gave a very interesting presentation on modern gas analysis techniques for process applications at the Durban branch July technology meeting.

This very specific and interesting topic included aspects such as: on-line gas analysis, sample conditioning system issues, basic principles of Raman Spectroscopy, the advantages of using this as opposed to existing technologies and of course pipe-centric integration. Judging by the many and varied questions and interaction after the meeting it was a well received and well presented topic.
