The Vaal branch’s final technology evening for 2010 was held on 4 November and the turnout was an indication of the leaps in reach and attendance that the branch has experienced over the past year.
The recent cyber-security attacks on nuclear plants in Iran have led to widespread realisation of the threats facing control systems in a variety of industries. Greg Chantler, a certified functional safety expert from Exida South Africa provided a thought-provoking presentation on cyber security. Given the sensitive and important nature of the subject Greg went into tremendous detail. Case studies were presented of recent attacks on control systems across the globe which provided a chilling reminder of the potential impacts these attacks can have. The application of the ISA 99 specification and others was explained as well as police being implemented by government agencies worldwide. The presentation also included a discussion about the philosophy of a ‘Security Lifecycle’ and the evaluation and quantifying of potential risks. Greg also provided possible solutions to reduce the threat of cyber security attacks and pointed the audience to sources of in-depth information on the subject.
