Latest technology evening: Energy monitoring for increased efficiency
With dwindling resources and rising fuel prices, improved efficiency is something we should all be aiming for. However, for this to be achieved effectively there cannot be a haphazard approach. Evan Dent, business development manager at Endress+Hauser, outlined the key elements for success in an automated monitoring and targeting (aM+T) solution presentation.

Using examples from industry, he described how energy management is most effective when part of a cycle; starting with data collection, turning this data into useful information, communicating this information to create understanding, and finally taking action to turn the understanding into results. This approach allows a new baseline to be established, and then a new cycle can be initiated to result in continuous ongoing improvement.
Most importantly though, Evan demonstrated how energy efficiency improvement is not just a set of haphazard, standalone actions – it needs a systematic approach that is part of overall plant strategy if it is to be effective.
SAIMC information briefing
The SAIMC recently held an information briefing attended by almost 30 industry professionals. President, Johan van Jaarsveldt, who opened the session, spoke about the role of the SAIMC in today’s world. Treasurer, Johan Maartens then briefed the meeting on the latest developments regarding the registration of engineering professionals. Fanus Roux and Peter Shepherd updated us on the new pressure equipment directive (PED) and how it affects local equipment suppliers. Matthys Gerber, of Legricon Legal Risk and Compliance Consultants, closed the session with a presentation on the various aspects of legal design and the implications of non-compliance.
