September 2008 SAIMC

The speaker for the Technology Evening on 9 July was Paulo De Sousa Gomes, national systems manager for Yokogawa South Africa. Paulo is also the chairman of the new FFSAMC (Field Foundation) Users Group. The presentation consisted of the following: brief introduction of the FFSAMC; all about FF; FF for the Process Industry; developments, benefits and trends in the I&A market and FF for safety applications.

The speaker for the Technology Evening on 13 August was Barry Mercer of Fluor who has 30 years welding engineering and metallurgy experience, he presented: 'Welding metallurgy for instrumentation and controls systems'. Barry has been employed by Sasol, Southern African Institute of Welding as welding lecturer and consultant, been with Steinmuller as welding engineer and presently 12 years with Fluor as punishment for all the other years elsewhere. Barry, as materials and welding engineer for Fluor, is responsible for material selection, metallurgy, welding engineering, corrosion and refinery damage mechanisms and has to date contributed hugely to the SA industry at large, but being very modest, he will not say so.

Barry addressed an issue we all come short on, being welding requirements for instruments mounted inline or on vessels and the associated PQRs, WPSs and other documentation, the QA/QC required and the documentation for inclusion in the Data Dossiers.

We were given an introduction into the different metallurgies we usually work with, followed by the different welding options available. After that Barry proceeded with the core issues of the procedures involved and the tests on completion of the weld. Last but not least, what we needed to allow for regarding documentation for the Data Dossiers.

This presentation added huge value for our vendors/suppliers who have any welding associated with their instrumentation and equally so for the ‘EPCs’ who need to specify their welding requirements. Projects have been impacted on by not following the correct procedures and many have lost a pile of money in the process.

If there is anyone who is prepared to give up some time to do a technical presentation or two at one of the Universities of Technology we support please contact Gert Potgieter, who deals with education on our branch committee, on either [email protected] or +27 (0)83 604 4038. The students want to hear more about how the actual instruments work and how the applicable technology is applied. These presentations are run under the auspices of the Johannesburg branch of the SAIMC but you may market your branding in your presentation.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
