Upgrading Gold Mine Water Treatment Capacity from 2.5 ML to 40 ML per Day. EXEL EE was contracted to deliver the complete electrical, control and instrumentation (EC&I) scope for the upgrade of a gold mine's water treatment facilities in Tanzania. The project increased the plant's treatment capacity from 2.5 megalitres to 40 megalitres per day, supporting the mine's expanding operational requirements.

Project location:

Tanzania

Project Outcome:

The project delivered a complete EC&I; solution that substantially increased plant capacity and supported reliable, efficient operation.

EXEL EE’s scope covered the following:

• Electrical, control and instrumentation design

• Project management

• Site installation and commissioning

• Installation of a 100 kVA three-phase transformer

• Containerised substation with integrated Motor Control Centre (MCC)

• Motor control panels, distribution boards, instrumentation, fibre-optic communications, VSDs, cable racking and cabling

• Siemens PLC hardware and Adroit SCADA development, installation and commissioning

• Supply of critical operational spares

The completed system delivers a robust, modern automation platform that supports the mine’s increased production demands.

Biggest challenge and solution:

A key technical challenge was installing large peristaltic slurry pumps a significant distance from the substation.

The vendor-specified VSDs were not sized to meet the pumps’ start-up demands or dynamic loading requirements, creating a risk of operational instability and commissioning delays.

EXEL EE’s in-house engineering team worked with the VSD supplier to analyse the application and optimise the drive configurations and operating parameters. The revised solution ensured safe, reliable pump operation while avoiding costly start-up and commissioning delays.

Key technologies:

• Siemens PLC control platform

• Adroit SCADA system

• 100 kVA three-phase transformer

• Containerised substation with integrated MCC

• Variable speed drives (VSDs)

• Instrumentation systems

• Fibre-optic communication systems

• Motor control centres and distribution boards

Unique selling point:

EXEL EE delivers complete electrical, control and instrumentation solutions from design and project management through installation and commissioning, combining technical expertise with practical problem-solving to ensure successful project delivery, even in challenging mining environments.
