Honeywell supplies Plantscape system for Mossgas upgrade

June 2000 News

Honeywell Southern Africa has designed and supplied a new DCS control system which will enable Mossgas to utilise spare capacity in its refinery units resulting from a reduction in landed condensate, by means of an imported condensate feedstock. This feedstock will be stored in four additional condensate storage tanks. Under main contractors Lurgi SA, the existing plant changed over during March and the new plant was commissioned in May.

Honeywell's PlantScape system was selected from five other control system vendors because of its technical and commercial benefits. Lindsey Eason, the Honeywell Project Manager, stated that the PlantScape graphics offer a very user-friendly HMI (human-machine interface) which is highly informative. At a glance, the operator can see the status of the motorised valves, the level in the tanks and the temperatures in the tanks, plus the various flow rates of the process liquids. The system will also provide management with the necessary alarm events and product logs, whilst a sequence for motorised valves will simplify operations. According to Tom Burke of Lurgi SA, much of the existing Mossgas tank farm did not have DCS operation and plant control had been achieved via a control panel with single loop controllers and stop/start buttons. The installation of a PlantScape system is therefore seen as a highly beneficial upgrade that will greatly enhance plant efficiency and management information, as well as facilitating ease of operations.

The Mossgas system consists of one server and a single operator station. There is also one controller rack and one I/O rack with all associated barriers and wiring. Operator training has already been conducted and Honeywell will provide full system support until a service agreement is in place.
