The use of stainless steel cable glands in the food industry

June 2025 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

In the food industry, hygiene, durability and compliance with stringent safety standards are paramount. Cable management solutions must withstand harsh environments, including exposure to moisture and chemicals. Stainless steel cable glands, which are available ex-stock from Pratley, offer an ideal solution for food industry professionals who require robust, corrosion-resistant and reliable products.

The material of choice for cable glands in food processing environments is 316 stainless steel, due to its superior corrosion resistance. “Stainless steel is crucial in the food industry due to its excellent resistance to acidic and salty environments, ensuring hygiene, durability and compliance with health standards,” explains Tristan Blades, technical projects manager at Pratley.

Ensuring cable gland compliance with food safety standards is a critical challenge for industry professionals. “A major challenge in the food industry is sourcing high quality and reliable cable glands that meet health and safety standards, as many manufacturers either do not offer them in 316 stainless steel or require custom orders with long lead times,” notes Blades. “Pratley addresses this issue by providing 316 stainless steel cable glands that are readily available ex-stock.”

Durability and compliance assured

Pratley’s stainless steel cable glands are designed to meet the highest standards. The Pratley Adjustable Gland for SWA and the Pratley Taper-Tech Compression Gland are approved by SABS and conform to SANS 1213 Ed 3 standards. This ensures that Pratley products not only deliver longevity but also comply with industry regulations.

The robust design of these glands translates to enhanced efficiency in food processing plants. “Due to their compliance with food safety standards and enhanced durability in harsh conditions, cable glands made from 316 stainless steel offer a longer lifespan, ensure regulatory conformance and ultimately reduce operational downtime,” says Blades.

The benefit of ex-stock availability

One of the key advantages of Pratley’s stainless steel cable glands is their immediate availability. “Items that are ex-stock are beneficial in the food industry as they ensure quick availability, minimising delays and maintaining operational efficiency,” adds Blades. This reliability is essential for food processing plants that must keep production running without unnecessary interruptions.

Pratley’s stainless steel cable glands stand out in the market due to their unique features. The Pratley Adjustable Gland for SWA has an adjustable nipple, enabling a secure grip on any size cable armouring. This ensures quicker installation times and labour cost savings. For unarmoured cable, Pratley Taper-Tech Compression Glands feature Pratley’s unique tapered compression bushes that provide superior gripping and sealing whilst also preventing cold flow. These design innovations enhance installation convenience and improve long-term durability.

In addition to these benefits, the Pratley Adjustable Gland for SWA provides an IP54 rating when used with a shroud, which can be upgraded to IP68 with the addition of an IP Kit. This kit includes a Nipple Gasket, Inner Seal Kit, and Shroud. The Taper-Tech Compression Gland comes with an IP66/6 rating as standard.

“Pratley remains committed to providing high-quality, readily available solutions for the food industry. By offering stainless steel cable glands ex-stock, Pratley ensures that food industry professionals can access reliable, compliant and durable products without unnecessary delays. With industry-leading expertise and a focus on technical excellence we will continue to support the evolving needs of the food processing sector,” concludes Blades.
