ABB supplies electromagnetic stirrer to world’s largest electric arc furnace

May 2025 Motion Control & Drives

ABB has secured an order from Çolakoğlu Metalurji for an ArcSave electromagnetic stirrer (EMS) to be installed on one of the world’s largest electric arc furnaces (EAF). The project in Türkiye represents a step forward in Çolakoğlu Metalurji’s journey to enhanced efficiency, sustainability and operational safety in their steelmaking processes.

ABB’s ArcSave EMS will be installed on a jumbo 370-ton capacity EAF, the largest of its kind in the country. The furnace at Çolakoğlu’s steel plant is supplied by Primetals Technologies and will benefit from a revamp courtesy of ABB’s advanced stirring technology, aimed at enhancing the production of various carbon steel products including slabs, hot rolled steel coils, billets and reinforcing steel bars.

Founded in 1945, Çolakoğlu Metalurji has evolved from a small-scale production facility into one of the leading steel producers in Türkiye, establishing its first rolling mill in 1969 and its melt shop in 1985. The commissioning of its first EAF in 2007 marked a significant shift towards more sustainable steelmaking. Today, Çolakoğlu operates one of the largest and most advanced steel production facilities in Türkiye dedicated to technological advancement and sustainability, maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

Çolakoğlu Metalurji’s investment in ArcSave reflects its history as a pioneer of sustainable steel production. The EMS will help the company as it works on meeting its sustainability targets via rapid chemical and thermal homogenisation in the furnace.

“This project presents many intricate technical hurdles to overcome,” said Özgür Özsoy, plant director at Çolakoğlu Metalurji. “We were highly impressed with how ABB plans to navigate these challenges on the way to seamlessly integrating its ArcSave technology into our operations. This collaboration will not only enhance the efficiency and sustainability of our steelmaking processes, but leaves us confident that we have selected a partner that embodies our values of installing innovative solutions for a sustainable future.”

“This project exemplifies ABB’s versatility in working with customers,” said Zaeim Mehraban, global head of sales, ABB Metallurgy. “Integrating our ArcSave electromagnetic stirrer into the world’s largest Primetals electric arc furnace underscores our commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of large-scale electric arc furnace operations and providing customers with industry-leading service and expertise.” Commissioning of ArcSave at Çolakoğlu’s plant is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.
