Reducing the risk of sewage spills

May 2025 Motion Control & Drives

The UK government has announced plans to impose tougher penalties on water companies in England and Wales that fail to prevent sewage discharges into rivers and seas. This move is aimed at enhancing environmental protection and holding companies accountable for pollution incidents. David Strain, technical director at the automation systems specialist, Technidrive, explains how solutions like variable speed drives (VSDs) and smart monitoring systems can help water companies reduce the risk of sewage spills and ensure compliance.

Mounting pressure from regulators and the public makes it clear that water companies must improve their operations. Fortunately, advanced technologies offer practical solutions to ensure efficiency, compliance and environmental protection. VSDs offer a vital solution. These drives optimise pump operations, allowing for precise control over pump speed to match real-time process demands. By reducing energy consumption and wear on equipment, VSDs help prevent pressure surges, maintain consistent flow rates and extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure.

VSDs also help minimise the risk of sewage spills in two ways. First, VSDs with diagnostic features can detect unusual conditions such as pressure spikes, which could indicate the possibility of a spill. Alerts can be triggered to warn operators to take corrective action before a spill occurs. Secondly, by preventing pumps from running at full speed when not necessary, VSDs can avoid overflows or spills caused by excessive pumping. These improvements lead to better reliability and lower operational costs, while helping companies comply with environmental regulations.

Making informed decisions

In wastewater treatment, sludge management presents a significant challenge. Inefficient sludge removal can put excessive pressure on equipment and lead to dangerous backups, which in turn can result in sewage spills. By ensuring sludge is removed at the optimal time, Technidrive’s dual-gearbox system reduces the risk of clogs or equipment failures, which can lead to dangerous backups and spills. Additionally, the system prevents both premature and delayed pumping.

The system’s dual planetary gearboxes magnify torque, while a load cell translates torque into sludge thickness data. This allows operators to make informed decisions about when to remove sludge, which not only reduces strain on equipment, but also minimises energy wastage and cuts operational costs. This precision also improves environmental compliance by ensuring that sludge management is both efficient and cost-effective.

Moreover, precise level measurement and real-time monitoring are essential components in effective wastewater management. Without accurate data on tank levels, operators may fail to detect early signs of potential overflows, which can lead to spills. Monitoring systems help identify trends that might indicate impending issues- such as equipment failure or improper water levels- and enable proactive management to avoid environmental damage.

In many cases, early detection allows for prompt corrective actions such as adjusting pumps or controlling flow, significantly reducing the risk of overflows and assisting operators in complying with environmental standards. These technologies not only prevent spills, but also enable more efficient use of resources, ensuring that wastewater systems operate at peak efficiency.

By incorporating advanced systems, such as Technidrive’s cutting-edge radar technology, water companies gain a more accurate understanding of system status and can act swiftly to mitigate potential risks, helping to safeguard both the environment and public health.
