The SAIMC steps up a gear

November 2005 SAIMC

The South African Institute of Measurement and Control (SAIMC), the official body representing the South African measurement, automation and control industries is increasing its efforts to give members value for their membership fees, create a sense of professionalism and pride, and to recruit new industry players into its ranks.

With the selection of the new SAIMC Secretariat and more use of Internet-based media in terms of communications to members and potential members, the SAIMC intends to change the image of the Institute.

Cornu Perold, the current president of the SAIMC said: "In order to be viewed as a progressive, modern representative body for the measurement, automation and control industries the SAIMC will become actively involved in defining standards within our industry, and the SAIMC most certainly wishes to be a leading light in addressing South Africa's skills shortage in these sectors."

Training and education has been receiving a new focus with the SAIMC becoming more active in working with universities, Technikons and colleges, to build on the current awards already on offer through our branch network, namely the Schneider Award and the Apollo Award and the Negretti Award awarded by council.

The new Secretariat is young, fresh, and with a strong emphasis on electronic communications and research tools. They have come on board as full members of the team to assist the SAIMC with general administration, management and website maintenance issues, to ensure that members receive total satisfaction from their Institute. Membership enrolment for example is now straightforward, with online registration and continuous state of play feedback to the applicant throughout the process. One of the highlights of the recently launched SAIMC website is the Forum facility, where members can talk about areas where they are seeking technical assistance or comment, and discuss these issues online with their industry colleagues. Members can access research papers, latest news, event details, they can even put on what their 'wish list' is in terms of added value services required from the SAIMC - basically the web aims to be a complete body of knowledge for SAIMC members.

The new SAIMC secretariat consists of a joint venture between StarSign Systems who designed and developed the new SAIMC website, and an old friend of the Institute, Tony Holme.

With this combination, the SAIMC will have the benefit of having access to a high tech and efficient administration environment together with the benefit of having somebody on-board who understands the needs of our members, and shares the passion for the Institute.

"The SAIMC is intent on raising its profile through the media; establishing its industry credibility; becoming an Institute to be proud of and establishing peer group recognition throughout southern Africa. We intend to again offer workshops and training sessions for members. The result of all of these new initiatives and activities will be the creation of a better integrated infrastructure for the SAIMC, quicker communications and response time but importantly, a new foundation for the Institute to go forward on."

The SAIMC was formed in 1957, and currently has five branches throughout South and southern Africa. The SAIMC's new Secretariat comprises: Tony Holme, Joan Jones and Kenneth Jones and is located at 305 Long Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg. Postal address is Box 1570, Ferndale 2160.
