Stack emission monitor features linear response

March 2003 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Spero Group remarks that the EP1000 stack monitor (made by Oldham, France) is well received by various South African companies because of the unique features and stability of the product. (Spero Group is the sole agent for Oldham France.)

Features include:

* Installation is made easy with a sighting facility while the IP65-related enclosure allows adequate protection against the elements.

* The EP1000 is able to operate on stacks with gas temperatures of up to 500°C.

* Measurement range is from 0 to 10 g/m³ in 10 user selectable ranges. A unique feature is the ability to program up to 10 separate processes.

* An optical calibrator is also available for periodic checking of the laser diode.

* Standard outputs include 4 to 20 mA, RS485 or RS422 protocol.

* Ventilation and blowing mechanism integrated in the mantle prevents the optics from contamination, by creating an over pressure of air in front of the optics, especially in the chimneys with higher than atmospheric pressure. It also acts as a cooling mechanism for the instrument.

* The use of an airflow detector raises an alarm upon blower failure.

* An automatic internal zero check is done to ensure correct point operation. No regular span check is required due to controlled optical output of the laser diode and optical sensor technology.

* A span check can be done from time to time with the use of an external optical calibration tool.

Linear response

The measurement principle of linear response to dust, results in precision over a wide range - the concentration of dust is proportional to laser beam backscattering.

Laser beam backscattering

Pointed into the dust-bearing gas stream, the laser beam is scattered by the dust particles back towards the instrument, providing a signal directly proportional to dust concentration.

The methodology used means that only one isokinetic sample is all that is needed for accurate calibration, cost of ownership is low (due to low maintenance) and there is zero drift.

The measurement technology is very well adapted for large diameter stacks found on power plants. Very long measurement path (up to 10 m), and no vibration dependence. Standard display keyboard permits user to view measurements and internal instrument parameters and do instrument set-up. COMM1000 software is now available, as is an optional remote display keyboard.

The 600 nm, 1 mW, class 3A laser system offers accuracy better than 2% and linearity better than 0,5%. A relay and indicator lights are available for alarm management.

Applications include monitoring of filter efficiency and keeping tabs on stack emissions etc. The EP1000 has TUV certification and complies with EPA regulations.
