Moulded rubber cable clamp for cellphone masts

Webb Industries, a Jasco group company, has entered into a joint venture with Eco Technologies, a US-based telecommunications company. According to Paul Richards, Webb's Executive in Charge of this project, the now well-known 'Cumfy clamp' is making an impression with US cellular infrastructure suppliers.

"The Cumfy clamp is ideal for the US because they presently use metal clips to affix the cables to the mast. The rubber of the Cumfy clamp significantly reduces rusting and there is no chance of damaging the cables. Although the clamping technique is the same in the US as here, the fixing method is somewhat different. All fixing of cables to the mast is with a metal clip that clips into a standard 19 mm hole. The coup for us has been to create this clipping effect - or 'slip-fit' - with moulded rubber thereby enabling us to use the Cumfy clamp," said Richards.

Webb has also engineered a unique configuration in which six Cumfy clamps interact in such a way that the tower is rendered significantly more wind efficient by decreasing the flat plate area. "All in all we have a technological advantage with the Cumfy clamp as not only are the cables protected but the design makes it easier to replace cables in the unlikely event of damage," explained Richards. Webb has decided to concentrate in the Houston and Dallas areas where the size of the cellular market is similar to the whole of South Africa. Webb expects to sell in the vicinity of one million units in its first year.
