Sealed DC power supplies/charges for heavy duty applications

July 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Omniflex is offering the PT 2000C and PT5000C (12 and 24 V) DC sealed instrument power supply/battery chargers for heavy duty applications requiring a high degree of regulation and protection. The units are good for use with sealed lead acid batteries to provide UPS functionality, ideal for use with remote terminal units, alarm systems, field instrument control loops and remote access systems - where power failures cannot be tolerated.

A relay contact output is provided to warn of an AC mains input failure with the default setting to the fail-safe mode, opening when the power disappears. A green LED indicates the presence of mains input power while a red LED indicates that DC power is being delivered to the load.

A feature designed specially for RTU applications enables a switch input on two of the terminals to be closed, which disconnects the AC mains supply from the battery and the load for purposes of testing the battery health. By monitoring the battery voltage over a short period of time the RTU can determine the health of the battery during normal operating conditions.

In the event of AC mains power failure, a cut-off circuit prevents the battery from being deep discharged, thus preventing damage to the battery. The units are dual-mode chargers, switching from 'bulk' mode to 'float' mode charging when the battery reaches about 85-90% of its rating. To further prevent overcharging in hot conditions, or under-charging in cold conditions, the units compensate for ambient temperature using an externally fitted resistor. This is set for operation at 25ºC ±10ºC and can be changed very easily in the field. An external temperature sensor can be fitted if the ambient is likely to swing by more than this amount.

The PSU/Chargers comply with all EN and IEC standards for safety, emissions, ESD and RF immunity, fast transients and supply variations.
