There are only a limited number of mechanisms that can be used to dissipate energy and to drop the pressure gradually so that high velocity/low pressure regions can be avoided, essential if the valve is not going to be severely damaged through cavitation.
The main mechanisms for liquid applications are friction and changes of direction - both of which cause pressure energy to be converted into heat. Mitech uses both of these to maximum effect in its energy dissipating disk stack trim.
One such valve is an angle valve with an ANSI 4500# inlet and an ANSI 300# outlet. According to ASME standards the test pressure for valves is 1,5 times the working pressure - which in this case is 115 MPa (1150 bar). A special seal arrangement in the plug head was developed to create a bubble tight shut-off at this pressure. Although this valve is to be used for testing a pump, the same design would be suitable as a minimum flow bypass valve necessary to protect the pump in normal operation.

Valves, Actuators & Pump Control
Little consideration is generally given to two-port valves because they are often perceived as simple devices that only open and close to control downstream fluid supply. Although this is mechanically true, choosing the optimal two-port valve for your application can make a big difference, saving space, weight and energy consumption.
