High-speed optical measuring system

The Sunx HL-C1, available from Instralec, is said to have the fastest sampling speed in this area of the industry (100 ms sample time). This robust and accurate system uses laser diodes and a special linear image sensor element to measure the distance between the sensor and the surface of the product. The sensors function reliably on any product surface, even black rubber.

When two sensor heads are connected to the controller unit, the system may be set up to automatically work out the difference between two measurements. This means that by installing one sensor above and another below the product, one is able to obtain a continuous indication of the product thickness - even with the product vibrating and moving at speed past the sensors.

Different output signal filtering options allow the system to be optimised for specific tasks:

* Low pass: removes 'noise' from surface irregularities, permitting lower frequency variation (representing shaft eccentricity) to be easily monitored.

* High pass: removes the lower frequencies, allowing surface irregularities to be more closely examined - even when the object is eccentric, or wobbling during the measurement. This is useful for locating seams in metal drums.

The system may be set up to go to a high or low alarm state when a hole is detected, or hold the last valid measurement - whichever best suits the application.
