Fuels manager software enhances integration and data exchange

August 2002 SCADA/HMI

A universal, high performance interface that permits data exchange between hardware field devices is the latest feature that Endress+Hauser has added to its state-of-the-art tank gauging software, eliminating the need for custom interfaces.

One of the enhancements is OPC server functionality in the FuelsManager 2000 Inventory Management software package. It allows tank-gauging data to be made available to any process control system that supports an OPC client interface. "Most major DCS/MIS systems, as well as leading scada systems, now support OPC interfaces," states Grant Joyce, Endress+Hauser spokesperson.

"Operators of terminals or tank farms at airports, refineries or other fuel facilities that support an OPC client interface can now access measured and calculated tank data via LAN, interface to host systems (DCS) that provide an OPC client and easily configure interchangeable data using one dialogue box."

The OPC (OLE for process control) specification is an open technical specification that defines a set of standard interfaces based upon Microsoft's OLE/COM technology. Applying the OPC standard interface makes possible inter-operability between automation/control applications, field systems and business applications.

"The common interface also supports an interface designed to browse and select database tags for which data is exchanged, providing an interface to browse and select point variables from the FuelsManager 2000 Inventory Management database."
