Fast-acting linear actuator

Mitech recently designed and manufactured a fast-acting piston-driven linear actuator for the power industry. The actuator was fitted to a bypass valve designed to prevent turbine overspeed.
The process called for a valve that could open fully in 0,3 s from signal, which included the time for the action of the solenoid. The valve was to shut 90% within 0,5 s, and to reach complete shut-off within 5 s. Test results showed that the actuator was able to fully open in 260 ms from the initial signal. The position of the actuator was measured at 1ms intervals.
For this fast movement, large air ports where used for both the air inlet and the exhaust air. To prevent damage to the actuator due to the rapid deceleration at the end of stroke, Mitech used a rubber snubber to protect the cylinder on valve opening and introduced an oil filled damper on closing of the valve to prevent damage to the plug and seat.
The actuator is designed for 1,5 MPa (g) operating pressure. It is used to operate a 100 mm Globe Control valve with a quick opening plug.
