Solution provider to Eskom and power generation sector

June 2002 News

Systems Automation and Management (SAM) is proud to point out that currently it is third only to the larger German and Swiss Engineering corporations in the Eskom Generation market, with regard to control and instrumentation and plant computer projects.

Mr C. Agostinetto founded Systems Automation and Management 13 years ago. The initial objective of the company was to provide a service for niche market products required by Eskom. From this focus, products such as 'Visual Automation (VA)', 'OpenCorder' and the latest 'Webprinter', were developed. Systems Automation and Management specifically developed these products for use by Eskom and the Power Generation industry.

VA

(A high-speed process data server and MIS system) has been developed in conjunction with Eskom and there are over forty VA installations within Eskom alone. Matimba Power Station is one of the biggest users of VA in Eskom and the only site in South Africa where third party systems have been integrated into their existing legacy equipment. The new Java front end for VA will be released shortly - this is a requirement for SAM's international customers.

OpenCorder

A paperless recorder was developed by SAM and launched at the 1996 Hannover Fair. At present Majuba, Tutuka and Duvha Power Stations have already standardised on the OpenCorder paperless recorder system. Extensive cost saving on consumables is realised with this product. The OpenCorder integrates with VA to form part of a Virtual Corporate Process Data and MIS system.

Webprinter

Webprinter is a newly released product developed to provide a paperless printer system for Eskom Unit Control Rooms, with improved availability and a more cost effective system for managing alarm printouts and records.

From an equipment aspect SAM ensures that the risk remains low by supplying client-selected systems as well as off the shelf equipment. The company has extensive technical knowledge of various automation product ranges as well as direct access to Germany for technical assistance on the products for which it holds the sole agencies:

* Inat - An Ethernet interface gateway to legacy systems (S5 PLCs, etc).

* VersionWorks - a newly released software version control and disaster recovery system for all project records, including PLC and scada code version control.

When undertaking large projects, SAM will contract out small jobs where possible to ensure that small businesses also receive an opportunity to benefit from a large contract. SAM is currently running projects on six Eskom power stations, varying from scada implementations to variable speed drive and materials handling applications. SAM is familiar with Eskom's New Engineering Contract and has performed various contracts using these general contract conditions. SAM's core competence lies in power generation and its largest customer to date is Eskom.
