Nigeria focuses on latest power generation trends

June 2002 News

Nigeria's on-going investment in its power generation infrastructures after more than 15 years of minimal spend, continues to attract the world's leading suppliers to the power and related industries, as evidenced by their involvement in the second PowerGen-Electrotex exhibition and conference in Lagos, Nigeria earlier this month.

The show, which last year attracted more than 4000 professional visitors from 14 countries, this year has exhibitors from the UK, Spain, Netherlands, Iran, Turkey, India, South Africa and a number of Nigerian representatives of global companies as well as local service and equipment suppliers.

"Nigeria is pulling out all the stops to ensure it can meet local power demands. It Is a massive task as, until last year, no new power station had been commissioned for more than 12 years and no new transmission lines installed since 1987," said John Thomson, managing director of Exhibition Management Services, the organisers of PowerGen 2002, which was held in Lagos, 11-13 June.

"The country has made tremendous progress over the past year building new power stations and re-furbishing an existing one, but there is still a lot to do. The National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) has been challenged with ensuring 85% of the population has access to electricity by 2010. Currently it is only about 40%. To reach its target, it is going to need 15 000 km of transmission lines and 16 new power stations."

Thomson points out that until such time as NEPA reaches its target, Nigeria represents a significant market for alternative power systems, from domestic and industrial power generators to solar power.

Exhibition Management Services (EMS) is a long established company operating a total Pan-African exhibitions service. From its base in South Africa it has, since 1987, established events in Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

EMS works in close conjunction with African government ministries, particularly the South African ministries of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, provincial and federal governments, parastatals, trade associations, institutes and professional bodies.

Powergen-Electrotex Nigeria 2002, an international exhibition for the power generation, transmission, distribution, alternative energy and electro technical industries just took place in Lagos, Nigeria on 11-13 June, 2002.
