Robust pneumatic rotary actuators

May 2002 Pneumatics & Hydraulics

Mitech's locally designed and manufactured pneumatic rotary actuators feature square drives allowing them to be mounted perpendicular to, or in-line with, the pipe work. Their modular springpacks permit the units to be easily adapted for double acting duties.

The robust actuators are available with either a spring return or double-acting fail action. In the spring return mode, the spring gives positive fail action in the event of air failure, either open or closed. Much of the available force from the cylinder is used to compress the spring, resulting in the spring return units' torque output being low.

When the units are operating with a double-acting fail action, all the available power is at the shaft, as torque output. Fail action can be obtained by the use of a volume tank and switching valve arrangement. These double acting types are compact, powerful and relatively inexpensive.

Special design of the crank arm has permitted reduced backlash, making the actuators suitable for control applications.

All units have simple 'O' ring pressure seals to reduce maintenance costs, and the adjustable end stops allows the end position to be externally adjusted in both open and closed position to ±5°.

Provision has been made to allow either a pneumatic or electropneumatic positioner to be mounted with an internal feedback arm, making it easier to convert for modulating duty. A choice of either a double crank or a scotch yoke mechanism is available for modulating or on/off control applications.
