In-line viscosity measurement

May 2002 Flow Measurement & Control

The Nametre Viscoliner consists of a sensor and a digital controller designed to provide on-line measurement of the viscosity of an almost unlimited range of media - adhesives, asphalt, pharmaceuticals, slurries, candy and chocolate, elastomers, fuel, oil, ink, paint, petroleum, polymers, detergents, cosmetics, syrups, sauces and solvents. There are no moving parts, the sensor is rugged, and easy to clean and maintain. The viscometer uses a vibrating head, which is in direct contact with the media, it is rugged, and easy to clean and maintain. There is a choice of transducers to suit the viscosity range of the media.

Available from Protea Automation Solutions, the Viscoliner is designed for viscosity measurements within the range 1 to 1000 000 cP.g/cm to an accuracy of ±2% of full scale. Reproducibility is better than ±1% and repeatability ±0,25%. The transducer is designed to operate at process temperatures from -5°C to +240°C, and higher temperatures by special request. Commercial safety barriers are available for intrinsically safe operation, class 1, Division 1, groups A through G. CENELEC (EEx ia IIB T5-T1) and CSA special acceptance certificates are available.

The equipment is supplied in two parts, the sensor (which is in the media), and a remote-mounted control unit with LED display. 7,5 m connections are provided, but longer lengths up to 300 m can be supplied to order. A 4-20 mA output is provided for remote monitoring. Each digital controller can service up to 4 transducers. The picture shows various on-line configurations for a pipe installation.
