Compact power supply delivers when others trip

April 2002 Electrical Power & Protection

The upper power range of the MiniLine series of power supply units from PULS is being extended to 100 W. Scheduled to be available in May 2002, its makers say that it is half the size of the competition units, and a leader in performance.

Features include:

* 115/230 V auto select input.

* PULS overload design: high output current in the event of overload, unit does not switch off (continuous operation).

* Compact dimensions: 73 x 75 x 103 mm (W x H x D).

* Easy to install: rapid connection, no need for any tools.

* Licensed worldwide for both industrial and office environments - as well as for home applications.

Offering maximum performance density per cubic centimetre, the unit offers valuable features such as adjustable output voltage up to 28 V d.c. so that power losses can be compensated for. The input automatically selects to accommodate voltage input levels from 84...132 V or 186...286 V. The PULS overload design ensures that the power supply unit does not switch off in the event of overload or short circuit. This means that heavy loads can also be reliably started without the need for oversized units. Several units can be connected in parallel as required. The wide temperature range from -10 to +70°C considerably expands the range of applications. The MiniLine 100 W is equipped with a high quality plastic housing that meets high specifications in terms of impact resistance and toughness. Its makers believe that the price/performance ratio for this power supply unit is unbeatable.

The power supply can be mounted in any position - either with the side surface or front facing upwards - with the help of the PULS patented snap-on fitting and the spring clamps, all done without the need for any tools. For installation on the DIN rail, the power unit is placed on the rail, snapped on and will then reliably withstand high levels of vibration. Removal is accomplished by pressing down on the retainer. The spring clamps are open on delivery. To connect, the cables are stripped, inserted into the connection terminal and secured by closing the snap lever. The springs integrated into the spring clamps maintain constant pressure on the cable, the connection is vibration proof and maintenance-free.

The launch of the MiniLine 100 W is being simultaneously accompanied by the use of new clamps for all MiniLine units; they are longer and, therefore, offer improved leverage. In response to the increasing use of thicker wires, particularly in the USA, PULS has expanded the connection options to the new power supply unit. Wires with an average width from 0,5 to 4 mm2 can now be used (however, PULS recommends wires up to 2,5 mm2). This corresponds to the American Standard AWG 12 -20. General handling is very simple as the spring clamps are all located on the front of the unit for easy access, with input and output positioned separately - input below, output above - preventing any risk of confusion.

The MiniLine 100 W meets all worldwide safety standards important for the EU, USA, Canada as well as the CB Scheme. In addition to the EN60950, EN50178, UL1950 and UL508 listed, approvals package also includes CB Scheme, after IEC60950 undoubtedly the most stringent general safety approval worldwide and, therefore, the most widely acknowledged. The combination of the MiniLine 100 W power range and the versatile installation options opens up a wide range of applications for the unit - on an international basis with no additional costs.

About PULS

PULS has been developing, producing and distributing switched-mode power supplies since 1980. Typical applications are for machinery and factory automation. The product range includes DIN-rail power supplies and DC/DC converters, as well as 19" applications. The main focus at PULS is on high efficiency, the conversion to compact design coupled with the highest reliability.

For the last three years the turnover has more than trebled, and distribution has been extended worldwide. The company employs approximately 400 people and its headquarters are in Munich. Bernhard Erdl is the owner and general manager.
