Ultrasonic level measuring in water/wastewater

April 2002 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

One of the most efficient ways of measuring the level of water, wastewater and sewerage is by ultrasonic (or time of flight) technology.

There are good, solid reasons for using this technology in these industries. The ultrasonic sensor has a measuring range of up to 60 m and so has no direct contact with the measured product. The product cannot contaminate or inflict mechanical wear on the sensor. Ultrasonics are unaffected by product features such as density, conductivity or dielectric constant.

Vega Instruments, one of the world's leaders in level measurement technology, has developed the Vegason 71-D especially for use in water, wastewater and sewerage applications. This level-measuring sensor is designed for use in weir control in sewerage plants and power stations, as well as for lock gate control. The Vegason-71D is also used extensively in open channel flow systems.

The Vegason 70 series of sensors has discreet transducers, which can be mounted up to 1 km from the control module. The processing electronics, display, power supply unit and all adjustment elements are located in a separate housing. This kind of configuration is mainly used for independent single measurements. The instruments are suitable for average measuring ranges of up to 30 m. The picture shows the Vegason-71D measuring the inlet in a Venturi-flume of a sewerage plant

Level measurement under extreme plant processing conditions
VEGA Controls SA Level Measurement & Control
Level measurement in LNG and LPG processes is about answering the simple question: “How much product is in the tank?” However, obtaining an exact value is not easy. The products are often under pressure, cryogenic, and highly explosive. Sensors from Vega have been operating successfully in all stages of the LNG/LPG process for many years.
