Intrinsically safe pressure transmitters meet ATEX demands

March 2002 Pressure Measurement & Control

Transducer Technology, sole agent for Gems Sensors, has introduced the 22IS and 26IS intrinsically safe pressure transmitters to meet the demands of the new ATEX directives, which become mandatory in June 2003.

Based on the successful 2200 and 2600 series products, the units have EExiaIIBT4 certification and carry the ATEX II1G marking. This means the units can be used in area classifications 0, 1 and 2 and all dust and gas groups except acetylene and hydrogen. The units are also approved for use with both zener safety barriers and isolation barriers. Applications include hazardous area installations, such as gas distribution, petrochemical and waste water.

These rugged units provide end-users with a compact, lower-cost option which can be directly fitted to pipework. This reduces installation costs, especially when compared to single-sided DP transmitters - which have to be remotely mounted and connected by small-bore pipework.

The 22IS and 26IS also feature proven CVD sensing technology and ASIC (amplified units) to provide long-term stability and high accuracy. As with all CVD models within the Gems Sensors range, these models provide good resistance to shock and vibration. The units have a pressure range of 50 kPa to 40 MPa (0,5 to 400 bar) and are designed for more than 100 million FS cycles.

The units are available with a milliamp output as well as a number of voltage output options. They are constructed from stainless steel and there are various different process connections to choose from. The product is suitable for almost any IS application, at a price that its makers believe is very attractive.
