1Worx partners with TUT to bring IIoT technology to African engineering students

August 2018 News

On 22 June, 1Worx together with Tshwane University of Technology, launched the first African IIoT laboratory, powered by PTC ThingWorx. Appropriately named the ‘Emerging Laboratory’, the facility is based at the TUT Soshanguve campus and is designed to offer students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to learn to use cutting-edge IIoT solutions to not only increase their future employability, but enable them to utilise a variety of emerging technologies to compete both locally and globally. Although the laboratory will initially be focused on IIoT, it is geared towards housing an array of emerging technologies that will propel African youth to greater heights.

“The idea of equipping young minds with the tools needed to create ground-breaking industrial solutions within the confines of Africa, is exciting,” explained 1Worx CEO, Duan Gauché. “Through PTC’s IoT Ambassador Programme for ThingWorx, students will master the key concepts of IoT and learn how to apply them to specific use cases.”

A TUT computer engineering alumni and 1Worx device engineer, Thembisile Sizwe Mngadi, liaising with Thulani Mazibuko, education manager for productONE Solutions, spearheaded the project.

“After entering the corporate world I realised that there is a knowledge gap between the student’s curriculum and the expectations of the workplace,” said Mngad. “I found that not having a clear picture of what happens after university, coupled with a lack of practical experience, often prevents computer engineering students from thinking outside the box. I believe that this initiative will empower students to think beyond their textbooks, thereby allowing them to realise big dreams.”
