TLC Software has recently upgraded the computer-based gearbox test rig for the components of South African Airways' aircraft from DOS to Windows. The CRS tester monitors the tensile torque limiter test, compressive torque limiter test, dynamic characteristic test and static characteristic test of aircrafts' flap screws. The system allows for both automated and manual testing. Once the tests are completed the data is analysed and displayed graphically. The specification curves overlay the test results and the gearbox is passed or failed based on these plots.
Previously the testing had been performed using a combination of manual tests and a pen recorder. "That is why SAA requested TLC in 1990 to convert the test rig from a chart recorder to a computer-based recording system," says TLC Director Luis Valentim. "Manual testing was a time-consuming process and resulted in errors. Furthermore, the pen recorder could monitor the tests but could not provide a graph. Because the data could not be captured and stored automatically there was no electronic record of the results.
"With TLC's CRS tester, testing is more accurate and much faster. Results are immediately available in graphic format. The results can also be saved on disk for future reference and retrieval."
