Optimum energy savings through good measuring techniques

Frankfurt Main airport in Germany recently discovered that with various Danfoss electromagnetic flowmeters used together with its established measuring techniques, the airport was able to lower energy consumption, resulting in less environmental strain. Maintenance free flowmeters from Danfoss were installed in the main pipes of the heat and cool air supply systems. Fifteen ultrasonic heat meters of type SONO 3000 with PTB approval were installed in the hot water pipes featuring an accuracy of 0,5% of the measuring value. Forty electromagnetic flowmeters of type MAG 3000 PT and MAG 2500 were installed in the cooling pipes featuring an accuracy of 0,25% of the measuring value.

Often saving possibilities are not used because it is very difficult to specify the actual value of such savings. Therefore, one of the main objectives when implementing this new monitoring system was to ensure that it was capable of reading all technical data such as output, temperature, pressure, outdoor temperature, relative air humidity and volume flow. Furthermore, the system should provide features such as system transparency, user friendliness, data safety and energy control. Finally, there was a request for documentation of operational conditions such as meter failures and documentation of alarms.

The airport initially approached Danfoss as a result of its reputation for offering units that are user-friendly, accurate, stable and reliable. These vital features combined with technical back-up from the Danfoss flow experts fully satisfied their expectations. The monitoring system was mounted in Terminal 2 and, shortly after, the department in charge of the operation was able to report considerable energy savings.
