Water for Africa

September 2000 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Major water related electrical contracts totalling R26 million are in various stages of completion in Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Botswana, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, Swaziland and Angola. The projects include drinking, wastewater, sewage and industrial effluent treatment plants for internationally financed government projects, Coca-Cola and South African Breweries.

These electrical contracts are based on providing turnkey services including design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning, which include the manufacture of motor control centres and PLC panels, the supply of medium voltage switchgear, transformers, cable, cable racking, PLC/scada systems and telemetry equipment. Each contract has been carefully assessed and structured to incorporate the wishes of the client, providing for customised packages. The selection of components and equipment for these contracts is based on spares and services being locally supported, and include Siemens, Telemecanique and Mitsubishi switchgear, Modicon and Siemens PLC's and Win CC, RS-View scada systems, as well as OP7 MMIs.

"The award of these contracts clearly demonstrates that South African companies are a logical choice for projects in Africa," explains Electron's Managing Director, Andreas Bohnsack. "The experience we have in providing practical, robust and cost effective solutions and control systems for South African projects enable us to compete favourably in Africa against world class companies. These contracts have presented us with many interesting challenges, allowing us to interact with very diverse and interesting people, and to deal with international standards and specifications. This experience will be used to enhance our services and products in South Africa. With our expanding services into Africa we are considering establishing offices in key African centres to further support this base".

Electron, through its partner company Tronelec Automation is a Modicon Systems Integrator, a Value Added Reseller (VAR) for Siemens and will shortly become a member of Yelland Control's Client Integrator Network (CIN).
