Waste management: key to productivity enhancement

September 2000 Flow Measurement & Control

In the industrial arena, the management of waste production and its recycling is assuming greater significance as environmental concerns deepen. Often, the production capacities and throughput of manufacturing plants are governed by the amount of waste material that they can effectively handle, process and recycle. Optimising waste production is a growing area of focus in the manufacturing arena and companies are turning to sophisticated software solutions to assist them.

One such solution is Futuristix's Protean application, designed specifically to address planning and control requirements unique to industries that have high levels of waste management. Protean can be linked into existing plant management and administrative systems and its functionality geared specifically towards the requirements of waste management within a wide range of mining and manufacturing companies, says Futuristix Business Development Manager, Ian Huntly. "A number of plant level process control systems can be analysed by Protean and production and administrative performance targets set by management. The system also produces reports and offers the user improved administrative efficiencies, thorough automatic entries and default alerts from fixed parameters," says Huntly.

Huntly says that Protean has been successfully implemented in many manufacturing plants around the world. "Their experiences can be drawn upon to help South African companies to become more waste management-conscious and production-orientated. Protean gives companies a business tool that empowers their staff to make better decisions and improve efficiency. It also gives decision-makers easy access to the important operational information needed for the efficient running of the organisation on a daily basis," he adds.
