Oval gear meter for viscous fluids
January 2002
Flow Measurement & Control
The oval gear meter has long been recognised as a viable method of metering viscous fluids accurately, Bürkert has recently introduced this principle of measurement into their product range. The traditional Bürkert electronics module provides sophisticated measurement and control functions to this basic measuring element.
As shown in the sketch, oval shaped gear rotors are turned by the flow of liquid. Each revolution allows a precisely known volume of the fluid to pass through the measuring chamber. Magnets embedded within the rotors actuate a reed switch mounted on a sealing plate, thus isolating the electronic module from contact with the product being measured. Each contact closure represents a precise volume of liquid that passed through the meter.
The electronic modules can be supplied for flow rate indication, volume integration, transmitting, flow control and batch control. These units have easy to read LCD displays for reading measured variables and set up information. The setup is done via a built in keypad. This module is common to all Bürkert flowmeters and can be removed without isolating the process fluid.
Available process connections are from 1/2" to 2". The viscosity of the fluid can be as high as 1000 centipoise with a measuring range of 1 to 350 l/min for a viscosity of >5 cP, and 3 to 300 l/min for a viscosity of <5 cP (a viscosity >1000 cP can be tolerated but with limited process conditions). The accuracy is ±0,5% of reading. The maximum solid particle size depends on the meter size, and in some instances, a filter will be recommended.
Typical applications would be for the measurement and control of glue, honey, oil, pastes etc. These meters have been successfully used in many applications in South Africa, and full back-up service is available.

Loop signature 29: Averaging or surge level control
Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
