What is the IoT?
The IoT is the inter-networking of physical devices (also referred to as smart devices), vehicles, buildings, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. Simply put, it is the concept of connecting any device with an on/off switch to the Internet (or to each other).
Broadband Internet has become more widely accessible, and as it becomes more cost-effective, more devices are being created with built-in sensors and Wi-Fi capability. Technology costs are coming down and smartphones are taking over.
As devices become smarter, more mobile and more connected, the devices used to manage them need to do the same, meaning mobile procurement is set to become a vital element of an organisation’s procurement strategy. The IoT can greatly improve procurement productivity if the company is equipped to process the analytics gained and make them actionable to the right people. For consumers and end users, the rise of IoT means an increase in personalisation, customisation and automation. For businesses the IoT will bring information: all of the devices, applications and supplies that employees use will be sending Big Data to the analytics that will provide greater insight into the activities and needs of the business.
For procurement, IoT will present an increase in spend visibility, and a better understanding of supply and equipment usage. This will assist the procurement team to improve catalogue content and spending by knowing exactly what is being used, and exactly what is needed. The ability to predict these needs will also improve budget and contract management.
