In conjunction with Specialist System Engineering (SSE) Cape Town, Adroit Technologies has been awarded the contract to upgrade and link the telemetry outstations serving the Overberg Water Board's extensive reservoir and canal system.
According to Dave Wibberley, Adroit's Managing Director, the area covered by the Overberg Water Board is approximately 65 000 km2, and will be served by between 45 and 50 outstations. "At present," says Wibberley, "three independent systems are in operation using largely outdated engineering software. With the implementation of state-of-the-art hardware and software, this project will be of huge benefit to the region."
In the first of a three-phase operation, SSE has already developed 12 outstations and put in three new Adroit scada systems. The scada gathers realtime data from the outstations through the unique capabilities of SSE's remote terminal units (RTUs) communicating mechanisms, which use radio and cellular phones to communicate with all outstations.
The Adroit scada system displays the data in realtime and the data logging facilities allows data to be stored on a MS SQL server. The data coming in from the reservoirs and flowmeters will facilitate the network planning from a central control room. The scada will also control the pump stations and regulate the water supply across the entire Overberg region.
"As a management information system (MIS), Adroit Technologies' scada system is invaluable", says Clive Marsh, SSE's Cape Town Branch Manager. "It is also easy to use, cost-effective and the only locally developed product available with excellent local back-up", he continued. "We will be using Adroit scada to monitor and control waste and sewerage pump stations in the region in a later phase", Marsh concluded.
