As a keen cyclist and UCI accredited level 2 cycling coach, Guy Watkins, Engineering Director of UIC Control & Automation, saw a way of giving something back to the community and started a cycling school in Hammersdale (KZN) in February 2014.
Children of Destiny at Home (CODAH) operates as a community project reaching out to the disadvantaged families struggling to cloth and feed their children. Last year the amount of people they helped every month was about 1300, including 650 children and 20 child-headed families. “Adding some fun in the midst of this hardship seemed like a great idea,” said Watkins, “and it has been a fantastic success. We started with 16 children and now have 143 registered and attending the twice monthly cycling clinics.”
CODAH has received permission from the local council to use a vacant field for training and a short cross-country cycling track has been established. Watkins’ long term goal is to establish the CODAH Hammersdale Cycling School to a point where it is community run, and also to identify cycling talent that can go on to greater honours nationally and internationally. Another achievement was the recent qualification of one of the local ladies as a UCI accredited level 1 cycling coach.
