A vortex tube is a device that can take normal compressed air and convert it into two air streams, one hot and the other cold.
The cold air can be adjusted down to -45°C, and the hot side up to 120°C. In enclosure cooling applications the hot air is exhausted and the cold air is blown into the enclosure. The main difference between the vortex tube and the enclosure cooler is that the latter is housed with a muffler and fitted with a high pressure relief to prevent excessive air pressure inside the enclosure. However, it is important to keep enclosures slightly pressurised to keep the dust out. Depending on how airtight an enclosure is, will determine which unit to install. Both options are available in sizes ranging from 145 btu/h to 2800 btu/h capacities.
The main benefit of a vortex tube is that there are no moving parts and thus no maintenance is required. The only requirement of a vortex tube is to supply it with dry clean air. In summary, on any site with a compressed supply, a vortex tube is a cost effective solution to keep enclosures cool and clean. Nexflow manufactures a full range of clever air products and can assist with calculating the size of vortex tube required for a given application.
